Q-Switched 532/1064 Laser
The Q-switched 532/1064 uses a neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet as its source. For this reason, it is known as a YAG laser. Dr. Gallacher expertly treats a variety of skin concerns with this advanced laser.
What Makes It Special?
The Q-switched YAG produces high-energy beams of light in two different wavelengths. The first is a beam of 532 nanometers and the second is in the infrared range at 1064 nanometres. Both create heat that destroys the targeted cells.
Especially Effective For Tattoo Removal
This solid-state laser is especially effective for the removal of tattoos. The 1064-nm wavelength is ideal for removing black or dark tattoos, while the 532-nm wavelength is best for red and other warm-colored inks (violet, brown, orange, and yellow).
Other Uses
The Q-switched YAG is also effective in the treatment of other conditions, including:
- Spider veins in the face and neck
- Some vascular birthmarks
- Melasma
- Varicose veins in the legs
- Pigmented lesions (age spots, freckles, Mongolian spots, café-au-lait macules)
- Hair removal (particularly dark hair rather than blond or gray hair)
- Onychomycosis (a common nail disorder caused by a fungus)
Is It Safe?
Both YAG wavelengths are considered safe for all skin types. However, as with any laser procedure, there may be side effects. They are usually mild and may include:
- Mild pain during treatment
- Swelling, redness, and itching that may last for a few days
- Blistering (rare)
- Changes in skin color
- Bruising (rare)
- Bacterial infection (which can be treated with antibiotics)
In most cases, patients will require multiple treatments before achieving optimal results, especially in the case of tattoo removal.
