What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a facial skin condition that most commonly effects women over 40 with light skin, though it can occur in anyone. People with Rosacea may experience visible redness and blood vessels on the face. Sometimes symptoms appear similar to acne, with angry, hot red bumps that may be filled with pus. Additional symptoms may include an enlarged nose and red, dry and irritated eyes. People with Rosacea may notice flare-ups that last several weeks or months. These flare-ups may subside and then re-appear periodically. Rosacea is not caused by poor hygiene. There is no way to prevent the condition in people who are hereditarily or environmentally subject to it.

What Can I Do About Rosacea?

Dermatology and Laser Centre offers several treatment options to reduce the appearance of symptoms.

For inflammatory symptoms, such as rosacea-related acne, Dr. Gallacher may prescribe oral and topical antibiotics. Once the inflammation has subsided, you can further improve your skin’s appearance with one or more of the procedures listed below.

Laser Therapy: The VBeam Pulsed Dye Laser is the most powerful method for treating the redness associated with Rosacea. It substantially reduces visible blood vessels. The treatment also stimulates collagen formation. Patients who undergo laser therapy for redness will also enjoy the benefit of younger, healthier looking skin.

Medical Skin Care Products: People with Rosacea should be exceptionally careful about the products they use on their skin. Many over-the-counter skin care products contain ingredients like alcohol and acids that aggravate symptoms. Dr. Gallacher offers a variety of professional and medical grade skin care products to gently cleanse and care for your skin without causing Rosacea flare-ups. Dr. Gallacher and her staff can recommend the products best suited to your skin and concerns.

Chemical Peels: Chemical peels can be very effective in improving redness and other symptoms of Rosacea. Dermatology and Laser Centre offers chemical peel options that vary in type and strength. An added bonus of chemical peels is that is also results in skin rejuvenation. A chemical peel will remove the epidermis (top layer) of dead skin cells. This stimulates new collagen, resulting in a refreshed texture, tone and evenness. This can restore a youthful, radiant facial appearance.
